Hormones Release in Small Amounts but Have a Big Impact

Blog Image: Hormones Release in Small Amounts but Have a Big Impact

Hormonal weight gain occurs when the hormones responsible for weight regulation are not functioning properly. This can be due to hormone resistance, excess production and release, or a deficiency of certain chemical messengers. Hormonal problems come in a variety of shapes and sizes.

With aging, the normal production and release of certain hormones may decrease, while others may remain the same or even increase. This is partly due to changes in cell receptors.

When a hormone binds to a receptor, it gives instructions to the cell, either changing existing proteins or turning on genes to build new ones. The endocrine system is often slow to act but has a longer-lasting impact compared to your body’s nervous system. The major endocrine glands include your pancreas, adrenal gland, thyroid gland, pineal gland, and gonads.

Hormone Imbalance Can Cause Weight Gain

The hormones leptin, insulin, sex hormones, and growth hormone exert influence over appetite, metabolism, and body fat distribution. Those struggling with weight often have disrupted levels of the hormones discussed below, such as:

Testosterone: Since testosterone is responsible for various aspects of the human body, including your sex drive, fat distribution, muscle strength, bone mass, and red blood cell production, both men and women should take notice of imbalances.

Progesterone: Progesterone hormone helps prepare a woman’s uterus for pregnancy and supports the early stages of her pregnancy. Interestingly, an imbalance between estrogen and progesterone can lead to weight gain and a probable cause of obesity.

Estrogen: Making good lifestyle choices is key to maintaining estrogen balance. This includes eating a balanced diet, engaging in regular exercise, getting enough sleep, and doing a better job in managing daily stress.

Insulin: Pre-diabetes and insulin resistance often precede the development of Type 2 diabetes. These conditions result in higher glucose levels in the bloodstream due to decreased sensitivity to insulin. Lifestyle changes early on can help restore insulin balance.

Cortisol: Chronic stress, which causes continuous cortisol production and release, has been associated with obesity, cardiovascular disease, anxiety, depression, and other health issues. Regulating stress and taking breaks when needed can help combat high cortisol levels.

Thyroid Hormone: If lab results suggest you are suffering with low levels of thyroid hormone, you may need medication to help restore hormonal balance. However, it's important to note that thyroid medication alone will not cause instant weight loss.

So how long does it take to balance hormones? It varies for each individual, but research suggests that with a personalized approach, you can achieve hormone balance. Hormones play a significant role in women's health, and imbalances can contribute to or exacerbate mental health issues. Out-of-whack hormones also trigger changes in a woman’s fat-storing cells.

Hormones have a major impact on how you feel. Understanding hormones like testosterone, estrogen, cortisol, insulin, human growth hormone, serotonin, and melatonin is crucial for maintaining both physical and emotional well-being. Hormonal imbalances often manifests as anxiety, with women being more prone to hormone-related anxiety than men.
