Dining Out Doesn't Have to Sabotage Your Diet

Eating out is a great way to catch up with friends and not have a sink full of dirty dishes. But, you have to use caution as most restaurants care more about making their dishes taste good than they do about your health. Almost everyone lives a hectic life nowadays. With working late, after school activities and trying to cram in your workout, sometimes cooking at home just isn't the best option. Use these tips to stay on a healthy eating track when dining out:
- Skip Sweet Drinks - Drink water, non-dairy milk, or unsweetened tea instead of sugary drinks like sodas, lemonade or alcohol. You can always add a wedge of lime to sparkling water to seamlessly fit with the crowd.
- Select Appetizers Carefully - There are many misconceptions when it comes to ordering appetizers. Both soups and salads can be loaded with fats, sodium and sugars, whereas fresh crab-stuffed mushrooms can be a healthier option.
- Avoid Fried Entrées & Sides - Fried foods are high in fat calories and cholesterol and should be avoided if you are trying to lose weight or maintain your weight. Opt for oven-grilled, broiled or baked.
- Ask for Smaller Portions - When you ask for smaller portions of the bad food items on your plate, you may end up getting a larger helping of good food. Some restaurants honor portion downsizing by reducing the bill or offering an extra side.
- Never Clean Your Plate - Although you may have been taught to clean your plate, that's a bad habit. If you never clean your plate, you won't be tempted to have second helpings.
Dining out doesn't have to sabotage your healthy diet or cause you to lose control of your weight loss plan. By following smart eating strategies and planning ahead, you can become very adept at selecting the best menu items without sacrifice. Eating away from home should be an enjoyable experience. If you do your homework, ask the right questions and make good decisions, you will be fine. And... remember to have fun.
