If you have generalized symptoms that linger for months, your immune system may be causing your body to attack healthy tissue. The first thing to do after you have received an autoimmune diagnosis is accept the fact that you need to take charge of life and seek to improve your overall health. With the onset of more than one hundred disorders classified as autoimmune disease, it is important to take notice of your health and wellness. If you are taking medications but have continued to feel bad for a while, it may be time for you to take actions to improve your overall well-being. Unfortunately, there is no unified branch of conventional medicine or single sub-specialty to treat autoimmune diseases.

Autoimmune disorders encompass a broad category of related diseases in which the person's immune system attacks his or her own tissues, such as:

  • Hashimoto's Disease - Hashimoto's disease is thyroiditis related to an immune system attack that destroys healthy hormone-producing tissues in the thyroid. Without an adequate production of thyroid hormones, many bodily functions slow down resulting in extreme fatigue or loss of energy.
  • Type 1 Diabetes - When the immune system mistakenly attacks and destroys pancreatic beta cells there is an absence or insufficient production of insulin. Following a healthy menu plan based on a balanced diet of real foods is an important component of living a healthier life with autoimmune-related diabetes.
  • Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA) - If you have been diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis, your body's immune system mistakenly attacks your joints causing redness, soreness and reduced mobility. People with RA who are obese get fewer benefits from drugs and other treatments when compared with those who are not obese, say the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
  • Psoriasis and Psoriatic Arthritis (PsA) - Although skin cells grow and shed as needed, psoriasis is an autoimmune disease that causes the skin cells to multiply too quickly causing scaly patches called plaques. When the disease develops in a joint, it may mimic a cartilage tear, so an accurate diagnosis of psoriatic arthritis may take longer.
  • Lupus - Since symptoms often mimic other diseases, systemic lupus can be difficult to diagnose. However, in many cases, a distinctive butterfly facial rash appears across both cheeks. Because of damage to internal organs, some people with lupus are at risk of life-threatening complications, like heart disease or stroke.
  • Inflammatory Bowel Diseases (IBD) - Similar to other types of autoimmune disorders, inflammatory bowel disease appears to have a genetic component. If you have a family history of IBD, you are more likely to develop the disease. Inflammatory bowel disease is diagnosed using a combination of imaging studies.

Talk to a dietitian or metabolic specialists about lifestyle changes that might make a difference how effectively you manage your autoimmunity. It is great when your medications work. But, don't overlook your body's long-term need for balance in what you eat, when you exercise and how you manage stress. Trying to do much on the days when you feel your best can result in a dangerous cycle of high energy followed by extreme fatigue. Remember, too much commitment of your time is physically and mentally draining. So, seek to balance your life every day and you will be living healthier every day.
