Can Vinegar Help You Lose Weight?

DATA UPDATE: The key to vinegar's health-promoting properties lies in its high concentration of acetic acid, and not beneficial properties of the culinary condiment. The “mother” in apple cider vinegar is a unique mix of bacteria, yeast and cellulose that forms during fermentation, but the mother does not perform specific weight loss functions. Moreover, acetic acid’s role as a supplement for slowing digestive processes is marginal when compared to the latest compounded weight loss medications. Dietary vinegar does, however, contain nutrients and antioxidants.

Vinegar's reputation as a health remedy stretches back thousands of years. Ancient Babylonians were using date palm vinegar for food preservation and treating ailments as early as 5,000 B.C. The "father of modern medicine," Hippocrates, prescribed vinegar mixtures for issues and wounds. Roman soldiers even carried a vinegar-water drink, to stay hydrated during military campaigns.

If you’ve examined a bottle of raw, unfiltered apple cider vinegar (ACV), you've likely noticed a cloudy, web-like substance floating inside. This is known as "the mother", which is a natural sediment of beneficial bacteria and yeast that forms during the fermentation process. The presence of the mother indicates that the vinegar is raw and unfiltered, and it does contain some probiotics and enzymes.

While many online claims attribute special powers to the mother, the scientific evidence provided by an independent panel of experts suggests that apple cider vinegar's primary health benefits come from acetic acid, its main active ingredient, rather than the cloudy sediment itself. A notable study was published last year that quickly went viral through social communities worldwide. However, the study was retracted this year due to multiple errors and questionable statistical data.

BMJ Group Retracts Previous ACV Study

In March 2024, a study published in the journal BMJ Nutrition, Prevention & Health gained international attention for claiming that consuming the mother in ACV could deliver dramatic weight loss results. However, the study was officially retracted this year after BMJ's integrity team discovered questionable statistical methods and multiple errors that couldn't be replicated. This media retraction highlights the importance of separating worldwide viral claims from verified science as conducted by the group’s independent analysis of the study.

A study suggesting apple cider vinegar helps with weight loss has been retracted by BMJ Group, as of September 2025, after experts uncovered major flaws in its data and methodology. BMJ Group advises journalist and others to stop referencing a study that once suggested drinking small amounts of apple cider vinegar each day could support weight loss in people who are overweight or obese.

While vinegar isn't the miracle cure that social media suggests, it can offer modest health benefits as part of a balanced lifestyle. Most studies showing positive effects involved participants who were already following healthy diets and exercise programs. So, dietary vinegar should be viewed as a supplement to healthy habits, not a replacement for proper diet and exercise. Excessive consumption can lead to tooth enamel erosion and digestive issues, so moderation is key.

What the "mother" is and what it’s not...

While the mother is often marketed as a superfood with miraculous health benefits, the reality is more modest. The mother contains live probiotics, which are beneficial bacteria that support a healthy gut microbiome. A balanced gut can aid digestion, boost immunity, and may even improve mood and overall well-being. However, the mother also acts as a prebiotic, feeding the good bacteria present. The mother is also rich in enzymes, B vitamins, and polyphenols  antioxidants that help reduce inflammation and support better heart health.

Studies suggest that the mother can help regulate blood sugar levels and support weight loss efforts. But this is primarily due to acetic acid, the main active ingredient in all types of vinegar, which can slow gastric emptying. By slowing down how quickly food leaves your stomach, ACV may help reduce appetite and lower daily calorie intake. However, these effects are modest, and the mother itself hasn't been proven to offer additional health benefits beyond what acetic acid provides.

Health Benefits of Dietary Vinegar

Dietary vinegar is created through a fermentation process that produces beneficial organic acids, polyphenols, and other essential nutrients. These compounds work together to support various bodily functions, including regulating cell metabolism, boosting immune function, and providing powerful antioxidant protection. If you prefer balsamic, white wine or rice vinegar, all contain the same active ingredient of acetic acid. But, for maximum antioxidant value, darker varieties are your best bet.

  • Blood Sugar Control: By incorporating this simple practice into your routine, apple cider vinegar has shown particularly promising results, with some studies demonstrating it can enhance insulin sensitivity and increase glucose uptake in muscles for better blood sugar control.
  • Weight Control: Research on apple cider vinegar, balsamic vinegar, and red wine vinegar shows promising results. When combined with a healthy diet and regular exercise, these fermented liquids may contribute to modest reductions in weight, body mass index (BMI), and body fat percentage.
  • Antioxidant Effects: Dietary vinegars like balsamic or ACV owe much of their therapeutic potential to polyphenols that are plant-based antioxidants that help protect your cells from damage. These powerful antioxidant compounds work to neutralize free radicals and reduce oxidative stress.
  • Heart Health:. By helping to lower insulin levels, vinegar may contribute to weight loss and maintaining a healthy weight is a key factor in preventing heart disease. In addition, antioxidants in dietary vinegar may help to relax blood vessels to lower blood pressure.
  • Digestive Health: The fermentation process that creates all vinegars produces additional health benefits by promoting a balanced gut microbiome. This makes it easier for the body in nutrient absorption of certain minerals and supports overall digestive health and well-being.

The key to vinegar's health-promoting properties lies in its high concentration of acetic acid. This powerful ingredient works by slowing gastric emptying, which is the rate at which food moves from your stomach into your digestive tract. This mechanism helps explain why a tablespoon of diluted vinegar can aid digestion, promote feelings of fullness, and support heart health by helping to manage blood pressure and cholesterol levels. With improved stomach acidity, vinegar also helps your body efficiently absorb essential minerals like calcium and iron.

One of vinegar's most remarkable qualities is its exceptional shelf life. Thanks to its naturally high acidity, vinegar is self-preserving and won't spoil or become unsafe to consume. You may notice some cloudiness or sediment formation over time, but this is perfectly normal and doesn't affect safety.
