You don't have to dread eating out in fear of wrecking your diet. Just do the same thing you are already doing and choose the healthiest options from drinks to entrées. When you are managing your weight, it is important to learn how to eat at your favorite restaurants, fast food franchises, coffee shops and food trucks while dodging hidden calories:

  • Consider Your Drink - You can quickly lose the benefit of eating healthy with liquid calories that contain little to no nutrients, such as soda or sweetened tea. Choose to drink water or select another no-calorie option like unsweetened tea.
  • Pick the Way Food Is Cooked - Grilled will almost invariably be healthier than fried and steamed foods will fill your belly with less fat, calories, and cholesterol. Chicken or shrimp are usually good choices for your protein.
  • Small Amounts Can Add Up - So, always order sauces and gravy on the side. Taste your food first as even small amounts can add up fast. Consider substituting high sugar or high fat condiments with lemon juice, peppers and mustards.
  • Select Smaller Meals - In today's weight-conscious world, ordering an appetizer or healthy side dish instead of a regular entrée is common practice. These are usually served on smaller plates in smaller amounts.
  • Right Size Portions - Never supersize it. Instead, right size your portions even when eating out. As prices have increased, many restaurants have increased their portion sizes. Be smart and take home a doggie bag.

Eating out is at the heart and soul of today's society. With some simple planning, you can make healthier choices when eating out with friends and family, or whenever you need to eat but you don't have time to cook. Learn how to select the best options while avoiding bad menu items. Healthier options are often more filling and provide larger amounts of nutrients, protein, and fiber.

Although eating out is a great way to catch up with friends or family, some restaurants are not concerned about your diet. Be better informed before you get there.
