Trying to Wing It Can Result in Dietary Imbalances

If you are going to be eating less, it is crucial to feed your body the right balance of carbs, protein and fat. These macronutrients fuel important biological processes and are needed in large quantities. If you ever tried counting calories, you know how restrictive that diet feels and how quickly the sense of deprivation sets in. On the other hand, aiming to eat the right balance of macronutrients is a proven approach that is customizable depending upon your weight loss goals.

  • CARBS - Carbohydrates are your body's most accessible source of energy. Added sugars, however, are not naturally occurring and are carbohydrates added to foods during preparation or processing. Major sources of added sugars include soft drinks, cookies, cakes, pies, fruit punches, dairy desserts and candy.
  • FAT - If you are like most people, you were told to avoid fat. Now, we know you only need to avoid or limit consumption of certain types of fat. Extra virgin olive oil and avocados contain monounsaturated fats and certain antioxidants that can help protect memory and cognitive function in the elderly.
  • PROTEIN - Eating the right amount of protein helps you build lean muscles that can burn more calories when your body is at rest, thus increasing metabolism. Protein might be the most essential macronutrient, as it will help you build muscle and prevent the loss of muscle mass when you are losing weight.

While there are times when a higher intake of a macro could have additional benefits, there is always a point of diminishing return. Some people prefer to determine their macronutrient need for protein first, and then fill in the rest of their daily menus with the carbohydrates and fats depending upon their food preferences and long-term goals. Trying to wing it with your macros at mealtime is nearly impossible and can cause frustration and undue stress. If you need help, contact the Metabolic Research Center for a FREE consultation.
