Experiencing Hormonal Weight Gain?

Blog Image: Experiencing Hormonal Weight Gain?

Hormones are key to your body’s control center and become the messengers for increased or decreased production and release.

From regulating your bodily functions to influencing your emotions, hormones are the key to how you feel and function. It's important to note that for a hormone to have an effect on your body, the target tissue must have specific receptors to receive its message.

Cells can be damaged by long-term imbalances leading to conditions like insulin resistance that result in weight gain. Luckily, there are simple activities like exercise and enjoying a brisk walk that can help boost the production and release of feel-good hormones.

For many imbalances, hormones can be managed through adopting healthy lifestyle habits. The hypothalamus is located in your brain and plays a crucial role in maintaining balance. It acts as a link between the nervous and endocrine systems. Even small changes in hormone levels can have significant effects.

Hormones Influence Bodily Functions

Hormonal imbalances in thyroid, reproductive, and stress hormones that may impact weight maintenance are discussed below. All can influence appetite, metabolism, and body fat distribution, including:

Estrogen: By understanding and managing your estrogen levels, you can take control of your weight management and overall goals for healthy living. But, watch out for environmental toxins, as they can further disrupt estrogen balance.

Progesterone: Since leptin hormone helps regulate appetite and makes it easier to eat in moderation. Progesterone balance supports weight loss and reduces fat storage and a woman’s risk of obesity.

Testosterone: Maintaining optimal testosterone levels can contribute to a higher quality of life, including less belly fat, more muscle, active libido, better mental cognition, and increased physical energy as well as good bone health and thicker hair.

Insulin: Extra insulin release can cause low blood sugar, which combined with increased stress levels, can be dangerous. Over time, excessive insulin production, along with cortisol, can lead to weight gain.

Cortisol: Did you know that your body has its own natural stress response system? It's called cortisol, and it's responsible for keeping you alert and ready to face any challenges that come your way. But, while helpful in short bursts, prolonged exposure to high levels of cortisol can cause a lot of problems, including weight gain.

Thyroid Hormone: Hypothyroidism occurs when the thyroid gland fails to produce enough thyroid hormones to meet the body's needs. When your thyroid isn't producing enough hormones, it slows down your metabolism, reducing calorie burning and causing weight gain. But, improving diet and increasing exercise can help.

Untreated hormonal weight gain can lead to various health risks, including Type 2 Diabetes, infertility, mood disturbances, high blood pressure, heart disease, stroke, sleep apnea, asthma, and cancer. Plus, unwanted weight gain can shorten your lifespan, and sudden or unexplained weight gain may be caused by hormonal issues such as thyroid deficiency, estrogen decline.

While we like to believe we're in complete control of our bodies and minds, it's important to remember that hormones play a significant role in our well-being. Understanding hormones like testosterone, estrogen, cortisol, insulin, human growth hormone, serotonin, and melatonin is essential for taking care of our physical and emotional health.
