Since eating out is one of life's great pleasures, it is important for you to adopt a guilt-free policy. It can do wonders for your social life and help you develop the willpower to follow your menu plan regardless of when or where you eat. Here are some tips on how to enjoy eating out guilt free:

  • Drink Wisely - If you are going to drink alcohol, be very selective of calories and limit it to a single drink. Sparkling water on ice with a wedge of lime is a much healthier option.
  • Select Appetizers Carefully - There are numerous misconceptions when it comes to ordering appetizers. Both soups and salads can be loaded with fats, sodium and sugars, whereas fresh crab-stuffed mushrooms can be a healthier option.
  • Beware of the Condiments - There are healthy ways to add flavor and spices to any meal without adding a ton of calories. On the other hand, condiments and sauces can be loaded with hidden sugars and fats, so choose wisely.
  • Don't Hesitate to Substitute - Many restaurants honor requests to help you meet your nutritional needs, so don't hesitate to ask. A side salad with a weight-friendly vinaigrette dressing on the side, so you can control the portion size, is a smart choice.
  • Never Clean Your Plate - Although you may have been taught to clean your plate, that's a bad habit. If you never clean your plate, you won't be tempted to have second helpings.

Eating out can be fun and sociable. But, for those watching their weight, it can be an intimidating event. However, if you stick to your health goals, you can enjoy your meal without having to give up spending time with friends and family. Don't assume you're limited to exactly what you see on a restaurant's menu. Most are more than happy to prepare a dish to suit your specific needs.
