Don't think you can eat out and eat healthy, too? Read on to learn more about managing your meal away from your kitchen. Although it is true that fast food is often high in sodium, fat and carbohydrates than it should be, healthier options are available at the most popular places to eat. However, avoid making these mistakes:

  • Watch What You Drink - When eating out, anyone who is watching their weight knows to watch what they eat. But, the environment can cause someone to ignore what they drink. Choosing the right drinks can tweak your metabolism and curb your appetite.
  • Choose Whole Grains - Look for both side dishes and entrées that are made with whole grains, such as barley, brown rice or quinoa. Plus, many fast food restaurants are now offering whole grain buns, wraps and crust as a better choice.
  • Small Amounts Add Up - Always order sauces and gravy on the side. Taste your food first as even small amounts can add up fast. Consider substituting high sugar or high fat condiments with lemon juice, peppers and mustards.
  • Select Smaller Meals - In today's weight-conscious world, ordering an appetizer or healthy side dish instead of a regular entrée is common practice. You can still enjoy eating out but these are usually served on smaller plates in smaller amounts.
  • Pass on the Buffet - If you are managing your weight, avoid the All-You-Can-Eat buffet. If you don't have a choice, then pick a steamed, grilled or broiled dish and avoid entrées cooked in butter or fried in cooking oil.

Instead of worrying about, which restaurant is the healthiest, focus your attention on eating healthy at the restaurant you're at. When eating out, many restaurants, fast food franchises and food trucks have menu items that are better for you. Most establishments offer low-carb, low-fat or vegan options for health-minded diners. Add a splash of will power and make good menu choices and enjoy a guilt-free meal.
