Protect Your Health: Be More Active at Home and Work

Blog Image: Protect Your Health: Be More Active at Home and Work

According to the National Institute of Health, physical activity is one of the most important components of promoting health and wellness. Therefore, it is important to minimize the amount of time you spend in sitting and break up prolonged periods of sitting as often in your day as possible. Being more active will bring an added sense of purpose and value, improve your sleep and reduce stress. Moreover, regular physical activity is associated with a reduced risk of many chronic health conditions that affect your physical and mental well-being.

Schedule Time to Stand and Move

Schedule time for being more physically active every day. For example, plan to do something right after you check your emails or always take your phone calls standing up. Most of the time when people say they don't have time to be more active, their response is linked to not having enough energy. Being more active throughout the day will boost your energy level effectively giving you more time. Maintaining high energy and a healthy metabolic capacity will automatically help you be more productive at your workstation. Moreover, regardless of the activities you add to your day, think of them as part of your daily workload.

Living in an Era of "Sitting Disease"

Sitting has been branded the new public health risk that is as bad for your health as smoking. Standing more during daily activities is being advertised as the solution to the rising rates of chronic diseases like diabetes, heart disease and cancer. Since there is a direct relationship between "sitting for excessive periods of time" (or Sitting Disease) and early death, health experts recommend you take a movement break every 30 minutes. So, make it your routine to get up and move every hour. Contact the Metabolic Research Center nearest you for great tips on eating healthy and moving more.
