Experts contend that the process of losing and regaining weight is a major problem related to fad dieting. Fast weight loss causes your brain to slow your metabolism, which results in weight regain and future weight loss attempts become increasingly more difficult. Unfortunately, weight cycling is not just an issue for overweight or obese adults, it is also being observed in young adults and people of normal weight who are obsessed with body image and physical appearance. Losing and regaining weight after dieting also can have a negative mental effect causing the person to become depressed and more discouraged than before. However, weight cycling should not be used as an excuse. Refocusing your efforts on making permanent changes to your menu plan and becoming a more active person can still work to keep off the pounds you lose.

Careless Dieting Seldom Produces Lasting Weight Loss

The primary cause of weight cycling in America is associated with weight loss due to careless dieting. Other dangers associated with fad diets and yo-yo dieting are very real with negative effects, including:

  • fad dieting focuses on appearance not fulfillment
  • fad dieters have difficulty concentrating
  • fad dieting interrupts internal hunger signals
  • fad dieting can cause lasting injury to your health
  • fad dieting is a precursor for eating disorders

Weight loss is easy in that it comes down to the science of how your body burns energy and stores fat. Weight loss is difficult as it requires hard work, consistency, and patience; or it is not going to happen.

Adopt a Positive Outlook for Permanent Weight Control

It is true that many weight loss plans fall short in the end. However, weight loss failure is most often due to the fact your diet or menu plan was too restrictive to sustain. Adopt a healthy outlook in the beginning to avoid a weight loss attempt that is likely doomed to fail. Overcoming the mental barriers is a big part of weight loss success and adopting a positive outlook can change everything. You may not be able to move forward until you address the unnecessary limitations that you have created for yourself. A positive mindset is to stop eating before you are feeling full. After all, it takes a little time for your body to react and signal your brain that it is time quit. To mix things up, try eating for a week using chopsticks or eat with your other hand. Moreover, your outlook on why you want to lose weight can be critical.
