Learn from Your Mistakes by Reviewing Your Diet Disasters

Although it is easy to claim that dieting may do more harm than good, it is important to understand that this is not due to a lack of willpower, but a lack of understanding about metabolic suppression and how the brain manages the body's set point. The metabolic set point varies from person to person and is determined by a lifetime of exposure to food and the individual's genetic makeup. If you drop below your metabolic set point, the body adjusts by burning fewer calories and producing more hunger hormones to make food taste great. The Cabbage Soup Diet is an excellent example of a crash diet for people who wanted to lose ten pounds but were not concerned about regaining the weight once the one-week diet ended.

Food plays an important role in relationships, so when you change how you eat, it will affect the dynamics between you and people in your life. It is important to find new ways to spend time with friends and family members that does not involve splurges, such as:

  • DIET DISASTERS - You've been on a diet for a while and haven't lost much weight and now you are feeling demoralized and are ready to quit. But, keep in mind that you should have learned from every diet you've tried, so review your own diet disasters for new ideas.
  • EMOTIONAL EATING - Determine the root cause behind the emotions that are driving you to overeat. Recognize that emotional eating stems from anxiety, self-doubt, disappointment, etc. and figure out what you need to do to fix the root problem.
  • DIET CULTURE - A diet culture is a population that focuses on the values of weight, shape and size while minimizing the need for restoring health and well-being. It is a misguided mindset that can harm anyone regardless of his or her age, body type, or gender.
  • CALORIE RESTRICTIONS - Calorie restrictions can cause your metabolic rate to drop. Without sufficient caloric intake, your body goes into survival mode to conserve energy and prevent weight lose.
  • PROBLEMS WITH DIETING - The problem with dieting is that it is restrictive and leaves the dieter feeling deprived, which typically results in a rebound behavior of overeating that leads to vicious cycle of crash diets.
  • DIET SELF-SABOTAGE - Diet self-sabotage involves much more than just cheating on your menu plan. Setting unrealistic goals or failing to give yourself credit for what you've accomplished are both examples of diet self sabotage.

Shaming people into losing weight creates a situation that is not sustainable. People who experience a negative bias over the weight they've gained may develop a weight loss stigma that puts them at an increased risk for developing obesity and remaining obese. In the long run, the quality of your personalized diet plan may prove to be more important than whether you're following a low-fat or low-carb diet. By focusing on whole foods that are prepared in your kitchen, you can eliminate, as much as possible, the processed foods with added sugars, refined white flour, trans-fats and high levels of sodium.

A personalized diet plan from Metabolic Research Center provides the guidelines and our experienced weight loss consultants provide the guidance to ensure your weight loss program is successful.
