Set Your Weight Loss Goals Before the Holidays Begin

Blog Image: Set Your Weight Loss Goals Before the Holidays Begin

Fall marks the time when the leaves begin to change color and many adults look forward to overindulging in seasonal foods for at least six weeks. Instead of making a New Year's resolution to lose weight, make an October resolution not to gain weight and you will already be months ahead on your weight loss journey. When starting on your journey, don't make too many changes too quickly. Trying to dramatically improve your diet overnight can be frustrating and often leads to throwing in the towel at the first sign of the holiday cheer. Fact is every day of the year poses challenges to controlling your weight. If you want to maintain your current weight or shed pounds during the holidays, you have to stay in control one day at a time.

  • DRAW A LINE IN THE SNOW - If you naturally like to take a stance and are someone who draws a line in the sand as a commitment, plan to stave off feelings of deprivation by allowing yourself a holiday cheat. Just remember, there are only a couple of holidays and the remaining days of the week should be managed as such.
  • EAT MORE FRESH FOOD - Even if you hate drinking water, there are great fresh food options that will help keep you hydrated. Plus, it is simple to do by adding some fresh veggies when you eat. Naturally, watermelon is an excellent source of water and fiber while providing a treat for your sweet tooth.
  • INCLUDE HEALTHY FATS IN YOUR DIET - All fats are not the same. Some fat like Omega-3 is not stored as fat. Instead, it is used by the body to build the outside layer of cells. Most fats are quickly absorbed and burned as an immediate source of energy.
  • STAY ACTIVE AND BE WITH FRIENDS AND FAMILY - Suggest holiday activities that do not rely on food. Invite a few family members or friends to take a stroll around the neighborhood to see the outdoor decorations. A non-shopping trip to the mall can provide a long distracted walk to view the seasonal decorations.
  • GET PLENTY OF SLEEP - Keeping up with demands of the holiday season is stressful but the sleep deprivation, which is common during the holidays, can make matters worse and lead to weight gain. Studies show that people who do not get enough sleep tend to be hungrier during the day and are less like to exercise.

Many people beat themselves up over what they cannot eat this time of year when all they really need to do is plan ahead and stick to their plan for controlled holiday indulgences. Saving your appetite for a holiday party or seasonal feast may result in overeating. During this stressful time of year, studies have shown that people who eat breakfast tend to consume fewer calories during the day. Moreover, include fiber-rich foods that will temper hunger pangs. If you put on a little weight over the winter holidays, you're not alone.
