During the winter months when you're hungry but only have a few minutes, fast food may be the quickest solution. Want to know how to enjoy eating out but without blowing your weight loss plan? Read on and follow the tips provided below. Healthier fast food options are out there, but avoid these temptations:
- Consider Your Drink - You can quickly lose the benefit of eating healthy with liquid calories that contain little to no nutrients, such as soda or sweetened tea. Choose to drink water or select another no-calorie option like unsweetened tea.
- Ask for More Vegetables - Many restaurants and most fast food franchises are aware that some consumers are choosing to eat healthier. You can oft times ask to substitute vegetables in trade for less healthy sides at no additional cost.
- Beware of Soups - When you eat out, don't be fooled into thinking that a bowl of soup is the healthy option. Unless you know it is made fresh, most restaurant soups come in a can and are often spiked with salt, sugar and fats.
- Share with Someone - Eating out with friends or family presents a perfect opportunity to cut back on calories and prevent overeating. Opt to share an appetizer or entrée and, if that's not practical, order a half portion or ask your waiter to put half your meal in a "to go" box.
- Avoid Ordering Dessert - If others at the table order dessert, ask for a cup of fresh fruit that is allowed on your menu plan or sip on a cinnamon-sprinkled cappuccino.
If you're on a diet, you already know eating out can be tricky. Since you are likely limiting calories, ask your server for help with the menu and make smart choices. Whether you're dining out with friends or meeting an associate at your favorite coffee shop, you can keep your weight management plan intact by following a few tips and making smarter food choices. This way you never leave the restaurant feeling guilty.
