For many people, eating out is something they can't avoid. However, it should never be used as an excuse to eat unhealthy. With a few simple strategies, you can keep your weight loss program on track and enjoy dining out. Making healthy choices can help you fit restaurant meals into your overall menu plan. Try following these tips:
- Choose Your Drink Wisely - Choose water or other drinks without added sugars or extra fat to complement your meal. It's best to avoid alcohol when eating; however, if you do drink the limit should be one.
- Make Menu Selections Ahead of Time - Most restaurants, fast food franchises, and even food trucks post menu options online. Check out the nutritional information provided and make healthy choices before you go.
- Cut Back on Condiments - Always taste your food before adding salt, butter, sauces and dressings, then substitute healthier choices, such as mustard for mayonnaise; or lemon juice for salt; or a spice mix in place of a sauce or gravy.
- Be Cautious of Side Dishes - You can order a healthy entrée and kill your meal with a poor choice of sides. Anything fried would be suspect, so ditch the fries and onion rings and opt for fresh fruit and veggies instead.
- Never Clean Your Plate - Although you may have been taught to clean your plate, that's a bad habit. If you never clean your plate, you won't be tempted to have second helpings.
When dining out, it can sometimes be difficult identify the healthiest foods. According to the American Heart Association, eating a salad is number one health tip. Since your goal is to eat healthier, opt for the dressing on the side so you control the portion. Watching a sizzling piece of meat pass by your table may be tempting. Nonetheless, remember that fattier cuts of meat sacrifice fat grams for flavor.
