Do you know the best foods to order when dining out? Listed below are tips for eating out without destroying your diet. During the winter months when you're hungry but only have a few minutes, fast food franchises, coffee shops, and food trucks may be the quickest solution. Fortunately, healthier food options are out there but avoid these temptations:

  • Choose Whole Grains - Look for both side dishes and entrées that are made with whole grains, such as barley or quinoa. Moreover, many restaurants are now offering whole grain buns, wraps and crust as a better choice.
  • Half It! - If the restaurant you are going to serves over-sized portions, opt to share an entrée or set half aside to take home for another meal. Never take home greasy appetizers, fried sides or desserts.
  • Compare Condiments and Sauces - Make sure the condiments, toppings, gravy or sauces are not loaded with calories, fat or sodium. Menus at most restaurants now include nutritional information, although you may have to ask to see it.
  • Watch the Alcohol - A problem with dining out is the temptation to indulge, and drinking alcoholic beverages can add a significant number of calories, e.g. a large glass of red wine is about the same as a candy bar.
  • Avoid Ordering Dessert - If others at the table order dessert, ask for a cup of fresh fruit or something that is allowed on your menu plan; or sip on a cinnamon-sprinkled cappuccino.

When eating out, many restaurants, fast food franchises and food trucks offer healthy options with menu items that are better for you. Add a splash of will power and make good menu choices and you can enjoy a guilt-free meal. Although many restaurant menus offer endless possibilities, most have zero guidance on what is healthy, or not. So, ask your server for help with eliminating unwanted calories and fats.
