When it is time to eat out, there are numerous options instead of soggy fast food that's loaded with tons of calories. Although bad choices can live on the fanciest of menus, most restaurants have responded to eater demand and now offer at least a few healthy options on their menu. When it comes to grabbing a bite of food, fast does not have to mean unhealthy. Most fast food chains, food trucks and coffee shops are offering healthy alternatives but follow these tips for making smart decisions:

  • Drink Wisely - If you are going to drink alcohol, be very selective of calories and limit it to a single drink. Sparkling water on ice with a wedge of lime is a much healthier option. With your meal, avoid sugary drinks and opt for water.
  • Opt for Whole Grains - Everyone knows that eating too much bread is not good for managing one's weight. However, entrées and sides made from whole grains, such as quinoa, brown rice or barley provides a healthier alternative.
  • Avoid Fried Entrées & Sides - Fried foods are high in fat calories and cholesterol and should be avoided, if you are trying to lose weight or maintain your weight. Opt for oven-grilled, broiled or baked.
  • Size Does Matter - When you ask for smaller portions of the bad food items, you may end up getting a larger helping of good food. Some restaurants honor portion downsizing by reducing the bill or offering an extra side.
  • Never Clean Your Plate - Although you may have been taught to clean your plate, that's a bad habit. If you never clean your plate, you won't be tempted to have second helpings. Simply reverse the logic.

Many sit-down restaurants, fast food franchises and coffee shops now offer delicious meals and menu items that are healthier for you. Nonetheless, it still takes some willpower and determination to identify which foods to order when dining out. Remember, the quality of ingredients used by a restaurant often determines how they are prepared. A fine piece of meat should only need a sprinkle of spices before grilling.
