Don't think you can eat out and eat healthy, too? Read on to learn more about managing your meal away from your kitchen. Just because you're managing your weight doesn't mean that you cannot meet others for a quick meal. There are healthier options but keep these basic rules in mind:

  • Watch the Alcohol - A problem with dining out is the temptation to indulge and drinking alcoholic beverages can add a significant number of calories, e.g. a large glass of red wine is about the same as a candy bar.
  • Savor a Salad - Whether you start your meal with a fresh salad packed with healthy vegetables or choose a salad as your side, salads help you feel satisfied sooner. Always ask for the dressing on the side and be sparing.
  • Small Amounts Add Up - Always order sauces and gravy on the side. Taste your food first as even small amounts can add up fast. Consider substituting high sugar or high fat condiments with lemon juice, peppers and mustards.
  • Avoid Super Sizing - Super sizing started as a fast food marketing ploy to extend to you a better deal. Unfortunately, it has evolved into the latest "un-advertised" serving size. If you are served extra food, don't eat it.
  • Fill Your Plate with Veggies - Certain dishes like kabobs or stir-fries usually contain more vegetables and are filled with satisfying flavors. For your side, select a fresh seasonal fruit cup.

Instead of worrying about, which restaurant is the healthiest, focus your attention on eating healthy at the restaurant you're at. Most establishments offer low-carb, low-fat, or vegan options for health-minded diners. Balance your meals when eating out by including healthier selections and choosing freshly made sides instead of starches and fried foods.
