Eating out is a great way to catch up with friends without having a sink full of dirty dishes. But, you have to use caution as most restaurants care more about making their dishes taste good than they do about your health. Fortunately, most fast food chains, food trucks and coffee shops are offering healthy alternatives but you will still want to follow these tips for making smart decisions:

  • Watch for Unhealthy Sides - When eating out, always try to substitute unhealthy side dishes with healthier food options. Ask for carrots or apple slices in place of French fries or onion rings.
  • Beware of the Condiments - There are healthy ways to add flavor and spices to any meal without adding a ton of calories. On the other hand, condiments and sauces can be loaded with hidden sugars and fats.
  • Stick to Your Guns - Restaurants may be intimidating to those who are trying to stick to a healthy menu plan. Most establishments will allow you to enjoy a fine restaurant meal without abandoning healthy eating.
  • Ask for Half Portions - If you cannot share a large meal with a friend, you can always ask for a smaller portion or order from the kid's menu. When this is not practical, ask for a To-Go box and, when the food is served, divvy up smaller portions.
  • Skip Sweet Drinks - Drink water, non-dairy milk or unsweetened tea instead of sugary drinks like sodas, lemonade or alcohol. You can always add a wedge of lime to sparkling water to fit with the crowd.

Dining out does not have to sabotage your healthy diet or cause you to lose control of your weight loss plan. By following smart eating strategies, you can become very adept at selecting the best menu items without sacrifice. When eating out at a new restaurant, there are always unknowns. It is prudent to ask how dishes are prepared.
