Sitting May Be as Dangerous as Smoking

Blog Image: Sitting May Be as Dangerous as Smoking

Sedentary lifestyles are so common in today's culture that inactivity may be more dangerous to your health than smoking. Although sitting too much is obviously bad for your health, you can actually reverse the ill effects by standing, walking and climbing during the day. Walk or bike to work if you can. If you ride a bus or carpool, get off a few blocks early and walk. If you have an office job, when unexpected meetings pop up, ask your co-workers to hold these "on-the-go." Asking your associates to hold meetings on the go can help to generate new creative ideas while improving everyone's health and well-being.

Don't Sabotage Your Health

Everyone's job gets crazy at times but that's no reason to neglect your fitness. New research has found that prolonged sitting can sabotage your health and turn you into a 9-to-5 couch potato. Use an inexpensive phone app that will remind you when it is time to get up and move. To get away from your desk, invite someone on a quick stroll to get some fresh air and hash over ideas. A change of pace and scenery can help reduce tension and encourage more creativity. Also, instead of dialing an extension or sending an email, take a brisk stroll back and forth to a co-workers office. For an added boost, drink a glass of water whenever you take a break at work or at home.

Take the First Step in Your New Routine

Most of the time when people say they don't have time to be more active, their response is linked to not having enough energy. Adding activities throughout the day will boost energy effectively giving you more time. According to the American Heart Association, it's all about standing up and taking that first step. Make it your new routine to get up and move at least one time every hour. Remember, if you have to sit most of the day, it is important to take simple fitness breaks at your desk or wherever you are at the time. A change of pace and scenery can help reduce tension and encourage more creativity.

Many people new to the Metabolic Research Center felt the same way about not having enough time to exercise every day. However, they found just a few small changes to their everyday habits has made a world of difference.
