Is a Ketogenic Menu Plan Right for You?
If you have struggled with trying to lose weight and keep off, you are likely following a plan that does not support your body's needs. Fad diets are sometimes effective for shedding a few pounds quickly but most people struggle to keep the weight off once they return to eating a sensible diet. At the Metabolic Research Center, we have always personalized solutions that support each individual's unique goals. With over thirty years of helping people, just like you, restore their health and wellness, our consultants have guided many clients on weight loss journeys that followed scientific-based menu plans that are proven to work.
History of the Ketogenic Diet
The ketogenic diet and attaining the metabolic state of ketosis is nothing new. In fact, doctors have prescribed keto-friendly meal plans for almost hundred years. According to the National Institute of Health, fasting has been used to treat epilepsy since at least 500 BC. The modern application of a dietary regimen that would mimic the metabolism of fasting was introduced in the 1920s by physicians who sought a treatment for complex cases of pediatric epilepsy that did not respond to traditional medications. For more than twenty years, inducing a state of ketosis was the only treatment that helped manage crippling seizures. As effective anticonvulsant drugs were discovered, the use of the original diet declined, but the practice of fasting remained and is still practiced in many cultures.
Scientific research in the 1960s explained the process of ketosis where more ketones are produced by medium-chained triglycerides (MCTs) per unit of energy. This is due to ketones being quickly transported to the liver via blood rather than the person's lymphatic system. A decade later, the MCT diet was introduced to the medical community. This menu plan relied heavily on MCT oil and allowed for additional protein and select carbohydrates for more enjoyable meals. The fatty acids in MCT oil proved to be more ketogenic than traditional fats like butter. However, as is the case with all menu plans, the MCT diet was not well suited for every "body" as larger amounts of the oil produced gastro-intestinal problems in some patients.
Birth of the Modern Keto-Friendly Diet
Decades of randomized controlled trials came to the same conclusion, which is also the foundation of the Metabolic Research Center's approach. The best ketogenic diet is one that is personalized for the individual and carefully fine-tuned to achieve optimal results. Here at MRC, our doctors and dietitians have taken a century of research into account in developing a ketogenic diet that can be personalized to eliminate unwanted side effects while supporting this efficient approach to losing weight and restoring our client's health and wellness. Moreover, if you have tried a keto diet but did tolerate the menus you were instructed to follow, don't despair. With over a hundred locations nationwide, the Metabolic Research Center is here to help.
Our ketogenic approach to losing weight was developed to boost your body's ability to attain nutritional ketosis by burning fat for fuel. By eating healthy fats with moderate amounts of proteins and fewer carbohydrates, you can stabilize your blood sugar (or glucose levels), while avoiding traditional food cravings. One of the benefits of a low-carb, high fat menu plan is that it fills you up and eliminates annoying hunger pangs that cause many diets to fail. No single menu plan is best for every "body", especially since individual metabolism, body types and genes can play a major role in weight gain. That's where our experienced weight loss consultants can help you identify an effective and sustainable approach to nutritional weight loss.
Benefits of a Ketogenic Menu Plan
If you are overweight, you are likely more interested in losing fat (inches) rather than a specific amount of weight. For most people, their metabolism spends too much energy burning carbs and has little juice left to burn fat. Metabolic ketosis works well for losing weight, especially stored fat, by rewiring your body to use specific levels of each macronutrient (fats, carbohydrates and proteins). With the normal diet of mid-to-high carbohydrate intake, your body burns glucose first then moves on to fat. Ketosis reverses this process so your body becomes a fat burning machine. If you suffer from hormone, endocrine or other deficiency problems, you may need assistance in finding the right balance of macronutrients for attaining a healthy state of ketosis.
The Metabolic Research Center has personalized low-carb, high-fat diets for decades to help overweight people lose stubborn fat deposits and maintain a healthier weight. By retraining your tastes to consume a low-carb, high-fat menu plan, you force your body to burn its own fat reserves for fuel. Since the ketones produced from consuming healthy fats are readily available as a source of energy, you can go hours without wanting or needing to eat. Moreover, these unintentional periods of fasting help lower food intake forcing your body to rely on more of its fat stores. Some noted benefits of following a low-carb, high-fat menu plan can include greater mental clarity, increased energy levels, minimal food cravings, reduced risk of developing chronic disease, better cholesterol and blood pressure levels, improved insulin resistance and less inflammation.
