Belief systems are a powerful thing. We often don't realize just how powerful they really are. When it comes to weight loss, belief is especially powerful. It's often belief systems that keep people from achieving their goals or taking good care of themselves.

It's a good idea to check in with your belief systems. Identifying and possibly changing your belief systems can make the difference between your weight loss effort feeling like a pointless struggle or a rewarding journey. What are some beliefs that will limit you or create barriers to your progress? Here are some examples:

  • It will take too long
  • I won't look like the people in the magazine
  • My stomach will never be flat
  • I haven't been able to do it before, what makes me think this time will be different?
  • I can't give up my favorite foods!
  • I don't have time for preparing meals or exercising
  • I'm not like them (people who have successfully lost weight)
  • I don't deserve it, or my health isn't important enough

These beliefs are often so ingrained that we often don't even notice them, but they are there, running in the background of our minds and thwarting our efforts toward health and self-improvement.

The first step is to identify them. What comes up for you when you talk about or think about things like losing weight, eating healthy or exercise? How do you feel inside? What words come out of your mouth, or what thoughts run through your mind? Are they positive and nurturing, or are they negative put-downs? Do you predict your own failure?

The next step is to replace your negative beliefs with positive ones. When you catch yourself thinking or speaking negatively, counter it with something positive. Write it down, say it out loud and take the next positive action. Beliefs don't change overnight, so be patient with yourself, and act as if the belief has already been changed.
