New Evidence Grapefruit Can Boost Weight Loss

Spoonful of Grapefruit

Back in the 1980s, the Grapefruit Diet was touted as the miracle weight-loss solution for weight-conscious Americans. Like many other diets that centered on a magical ingredient, the diet itself proved to be no more than a fad. Although it doesn't kick start your metabolism, new research does indicate that there may be something beneficial to including grapefruit in a weight loss plan.

Scripps Clinic Follow-Up Study

Researchers at the Nutrition and Medical Research Centre at Scripps Clinic in San Diego did a follow-up study on how and why grapefruit might help with weight loss. The original diet probably caused weight loss because total calories and foods were restricted. Researchers confirmed that the benefits of the diet were a myth. However, they did find that grapefruit added to a healthy, balanced weight loss diet does have some positive effects.

The scientists studied two groups of participants. The first group ate their usual meals and added half a grapefruit or a serving of grapefruit juice to each meal. The second group actively tried to lose weight but did not include grapefruit or grapefruit juice in their diet. The researchers found that over a 12-week period, those who ate grapefruit lost an average of 3.6 pounds while those who drank juice lost 3.3 pounds. The non-grapefruit group didn't lose weight.

Grapefruit Can Lower Blood Sugar Levels

Grapefruit has the ability to lower blood sugar levels in much the same way that some diabetic medications do. It improves insulin sensitivity, which affects how the body's cells respond to insulin – the hormone that regulates blood sugar. When insulin sensitivity improves, patients typically have decreased appetites, which may be why they lose weight.

If you want to add grapefruit to your diet, however, check with your doctor. Unlike many other citrus fruits, grapefruit can interact with a number of medications. Contact the Metabolic Research Center for more information or help to lose weight while eating real food.

MRC of Vancouver started me going in my attempt to loose 30 years of weight gain!! I have been using their program for about 18 months and have actually lost 30 pounds. I have changed the way I eat. I've learned what foods are best for ME. By analyzing my DNA and hormones, they helped me learn to eat what was right for me. I have "tweeked" my purchases and preparation of food to make eating healthy and still fun for me. I eat lots of veggies and salads and include a healthy diet of protein. These are very satisfying. Do I "cheat" now and then? Yes, but I don't like how I feel after eating sugar and lots of carbs so I return to my good foods quickly and continue to see my weight drop. I walk my little dog four times a day and have a part-time job that allows me a lot of movement. I feel so healthy and wonderful. It's easy to continue to eat and live a more healthy lifestyle! When I confessed about eating the wrong "foods", the gals simply encouraged me and gave me fresh ideas to satisfy my taste buds. I always felt I could be honest during my consultations with no fear of being lectured! I plan to continue until I reach my desired weight. I expect to reach my goal by 2017. After I reach my weight goal, I plan to remain in good health with my new found healthy way of eating the calories I need to maintain my proper weight. My Dr. is very pleased at my progress. She wondered how I have lost 30 pounds.
