Don't Let Travel Tank Your Weight Loss Efforts

Hitting the road for a vacation or business trip soon? If you're also working to lose weight, you might find it a bit difficult to stay on track with your health and weight loss goals while on the road. Metabolic Research Center offers these tips for healthy, weight-loss friendly traveling:

  • Book the right room: When choosing hotels, call ahead tofind out about all fitness-related offerings that may not be listed online. While 84 percent of hotels today have on-site fitness centers, many that don't have deals with nearby fitness clubs where you can work out free or for a steeply discounted charge. Hotels increasingly are offering group exercise and yoga classes, and walking or running excursions open only to guests. Otherfitness-centric amenities that your hotel may offer are in-room exercise equipment, bicycles that can be checked out and kits that include exercise apparel, yoga mats, stretch bands and even MP3 players pre-loaded with energizing music.
  • Pack smart: When packing for a trip, be sure to include workout clothing and shoes. Pack them last so that they're situated on top of all other items. They'll be the first items you see when you open your suitcase, reminding you to make getting a daily workout a priority while traveling.
  • Keep healthy snacks handy: Healthy, low-calorie and low-fat snacking options can be tough to find while you're traveling. And those airport and minibar snacks can be pricey. Pack your own snacks, such as nuts, oats, fruits and veggies. If you're flying, be sure to pack them in your carry-on bag so they're always within reach.
  • Do your sight-seeing on foot: The best part of traveling is seeing new sights. Make the most of your sight-seeing tours by taking them on-foot. Enjoy brisk walks, jogs or runs through the local area. Ask your hotel concierge or friendly locals about the best running/walking routes, especially those that take you past historic or interesting landmarks. Keep in mind that some hotels even have running or walking programs with outings led by fitness concierges.
