When traveling, either for business or pleasure, you might find it difficult to stay on a healthy, weight loss-friendly track. Or, you might simply be tempted to throw caution to the wind, skip exercise and enjoy calorie spurges at mealtime. If you're working to lose weight, don't let a trip away hinder your efforts. Metabolic Research Center offers these tips for healthy traveling:

  1. Stay smart: Call ahead to confirm whether the hotel you're considering has an on-site exercise center or has a deal with a fitness club nearby, preferably within walking distance of the hotel. Many hotels now offer group exercise, walking, running or yoga classes open only to guests, plus fitness-centric amenities like in-room exercise equipment, bicycles that can be checked out and kits that include exercise apparel, yoga mats, stretch bands and even MP3 players pre-loaded with workout-friendly music. Be sure to ask the concierge about all fitness-related offerings.
  2. Pack smart: When packing for a trip, be sure to include workout clothing and shoes. We recommend packing them on top so that they're the first thing you see when you open your suitcase and placing them beside your bed so you're inspired to put them on when you wake.
  3. See the local sights on foot: Make the most of your sight-seeing by taking brisk walks, jogs or runs through the local area. Many hotels now offerscenic running and walking route maps that begin and end at the hotel and take you past interesting landmarks, and some hotels even have running programs with outings led by fitness concierges.
  4. Pack healthy snacks: Healthy snacking options can be scarce while on the road. And those minibar snacks can be pricey. Pack your own snacks, such as nuts, oats, fruits and veggies. If you're flying, be sure to pack them in your carry-on bag so they're always handy.
