Pudgy Pooch? Four Ways You Can Slim Down Together

  1. Amp up your daily walks: If walking your dog lasts the duration of a potty break, it's time to amp things up a bit. Rather than a quick walk across the yard, make it last longer by heading out for a stroll around the block, down to the park or along the beach. Pick up the pace by switching your walk to steady job or a run when you're half way home. Or make it a group effort by meeting up with fellow pet-owners for a walk and talk and perhaps a stop at a pet-friendly café on the way home.
  2. Build a backyard agility course: A varied surface lends a much more effective workout than does a flat surface. Turn your backyard into an outdoor gym of sorts by adding platforms, dirt hills, tunnels, jumping hoops and weave poles. Your dog will have a blast and you'll both benefit health-wise.
  3. Take up a dog-friendly health program: Many gyms, yoga studios and walking and running clubs offer classes or programs designed to give both you and your four-legged exercise buddy a workout.
  4. Play more: Make more interactions with your pet potential calorie burners. Get off the couch and play a game of chase, Frisbee or tug-of-war. You'll trim down, de-stress and have fun with your furry friend, too.
