You already know that laughter offers many health benefits; in fact, it’s commonly said that “laughter is the best medicine.” Well, you may not know that laughter may also help you drop those extra pounds, and studies actually back up this idea.

In one study published by the International Journal of Obesity, people who laughed more each day were reported as burning more calories. When participants laughed, they had an increase in both calorie expenditure and heart rate. And the more they laughed, the greater the effects of laughing. The results of this study suggest that laughing for 15 minutes daily can burn 50 calories, and while it doesn’t sound like a lot, it can add up to help you lose up to five pounds yearly.

Not only does laughing help you burn extra calories, it also helps to reduce cortisol levels. Cortisol is the stress hormone that can result in the retention of belly fat. Too much cortisol can also lead you to turn to food to reduce stress. Reducing cortisol with laughter can help with your weight loss efforts.

Laughter may also help stabilize your blood sugar as well; keeping those levels stable can help you avoid cravings. You won’t be grabbing for food when you’re really not hungry. When you laugh, it relaxes your body as well, reducing your stress. When you lower your stress levels, you’ll find it becomes easier to stick with your diet and exercise routine, which helps you lose weight.

Of course, laughter also offers many other health benefits. It helps improve your skin, relieves pain, increases the production of good cholesterol, and even gives your immune system a boost. With great health benefits and the added bonus of helping you lose weight, it’s time to add more laughter to your weight-loss regimen.
