Washington DC Tops List of 10 Fittest American Cities
Once a year, the American College of Sports Medicine releases its America Fitness Index (AFI), a study that ranks the 50 most populous metropolitan areas in the United States according to the overall health and fitness of their residents. For the second year in a row, the nation's capital ranks atop its fittest cities.
In Washington, DC, 73 percent of survey respondents reported regular exercise or physical activity over the prior 30 days, 35.6 percent said they eat two or more fruits each day, 19.6 percent eat three or more vegetables per day and 86.9 percent are non-smokers. Residents there are ahead of the game. The report also showed an 11 percent drop in the last year in the number of Americans who exercised in the last 30 days, a 5.5 percent drop in those who eat enough fruit each day and a 7.8 percent increase in diabetes death rates nationwide.
