Four Ways You and Your Pooch Can Lose Weight Together

  1. Amp up your daily walks: If walking your dog lasts the duration of a potty break, it's time to amp things up. Take real walks not just across your yard, but around the block, down to the park or along the beach. Pick up the pace by switching your walk to a run when you're half way home, or turn your stroll in the park into a steady jog. Or make it a group effort by meeting up with fellow pet-owners for a walk and talk and perhaps a stop at a pet-friendly café on the way home.
  2. Build a backyard agility course: A varied surface lends a much more effective workout than does a flat surface. Turn your backyard into an exercise haven for both you and your dog by adding platforms, dirt hills, tunnels, jumping hoops and weave poles. Your dog will have a blast and you'll both benefit health-wise.
  3. Take up a doggy health program: Many gyms, yoga studios and walking and running clubs offer classes or programs designed to give both you and your four-legged exercise partner a workout.
  4. Play: Make more interactions with your pet potential calorie burners. Get off the couch and play a game of tug of war, chase or Frisbee. You'll trim down, de-stress and have a blast with your furry family member.
