Can You Drink Too Much Water?

Water makes up most of the human body, and it’s essential for life. It’s important to keep your body well hydrated, since the body cannot survive without enough water. However, you may be wondering, is it possible to drink too much water?

It is possible to drink too much water, but it’s not a likely scenario for most people. Hyponatremia is a condition that occurs when there is not enough salt in the blood, and in severe cases, water intoxication occurs when people drink too much water and there isn’t enough salt left in the blood. This can lead to symptoms like frequent urination, nausea, headache, mental disorientation, fatigue, and vomiting. People have died from drinking too much water, but in most cases where this has occurred, binge drinking of water was involved for either a contest, a dare or fraternity hazing.

Keep in mind, it’s not all about how much you drink – it has a lot to do with how fast you drink it. Drinking an enormous amount of water at one time can be a problem, but drinking a lot of water over time is not likely to hurt you. It’s recommended that you drink eight 8-ounce glasses of water every day, although you may need to drink more if you engage in strenuous activities or you live in a hot climate.

Drinking a healthy amount of water each day is important. When you drink enough water, it helps to keep you hydrated and makes you feel full, which can help you eat less food. Consuming plenty of water also improves kidney function and digestion. Plenty of water is definitely a good addition to your weight loss plan, as long as you don’t overdo it.
