Nuts are undoubtedly very good for you. They contain vitamin E, folic acid, monounsaturated fat, omega-3 fat, magnesium, protein, fiber and antioxidants. They have been shown to reduce the risk of heart disease and prevent hardened arteries. Even dieters can benefit from all that nuts have to offer, especially given the fact that just a handful of nuts can leave you feeling comfortably full.

Even so, nuts are also very high in calories, so it is important not to overdo. It is also important to choose the right type of nuts. Naturally, you will want to avoid nuts that are covered with chocolate or packaged as part of a trail mix with M&Ms and other unhealthy foods.  It is also wise to avoid nuts that have been roasted in oil, as the oil used may be both unhealthy and fattening. What is more, roasting nuts at a high temperature can reduce their nutritional value.

Macadamia nuts and pecans have more calories than other types of nuts while almonds, cashews and pistachios are ideal for those who want to lose weight. Walnuts are best for heart health and almonds are best for disease prevention. Brazil nuts are recommended for men as they have been shown to reduce the risk of prostate cancer.

Nuts can be eaten on their own, mixed together with other nuts or crushed and sprinkled on fruit or yogurt. They have much to offer and even a person who wants to lose weight will find that including nuts in a healthy dietary plan is a wise idea. As long as you do not overdo and/or eat nuts packaged in an unhealthy manner you will find that nuts will not prevent you from shedding unwanted pounds.
