Does a Gluten-Free Diet Help You Lose Weight?
While many people rely on a gluten-free diet to help them lose weight, the truth is that there is no evidence that cutting back on gluten will enable to shed pounds faster than would be otherwise possible. What is more, gluten does have its good points and eliminating it from your diet can leave you with nutritional deficiencies.
One important fact to understand about gluten is that it is commonly found in fattening foods. Cutting back on unhealthy starches that contain gluten will enable you to shed weight. However, the problem with these foods is not that they contain gluten but that they have other ingredients that help you pack on the pounds. Many gluten-free foods contain the very same fattening ingredients found in foods with gluten; this means that simply switching over to a gluten-free diet will not help you reach your weight loss goals.
If you are serious about losing weight, read the nutritional information for any product you buy, be it one that contains gluten or one that is gluten free. Look for different types of sugar, additives and empty calories that are known to cause weight gain. Better yet, buy food in its natural state whenever possible. Raw oats, brown rice, potatoes, vegetables, fruits and lean meats such as chicken, fish and turkey provide your body with the nutrition it needs without facilitating weight gain.
Naturally, there are some people who really do need to avoid gluten. Anyone with Celiac disease, a wheat allergy or some form of gluten sensitivity should stick to gluten-free foods. However, those who can eat gluten should not feel they must avoid it to gain weight. A balanced, healthy diet is far more effective in helping you shed pounds than diets that exclude important food groups.
