Eat Better to Sleep Better
Most people know that what they eat and when they eat will impact their energy levels and overall health. However, it is also important to realize your eating habits will have a significant effect on how much sleep you are able to get every night.
The American Academy of Sleep Medicine reports that eating the right foods at the right time can mean the difference between a restful night with plenty of deep sleep and a restless night during which your body gets mostly slow wave, light sleep. Sugary foods and foods with a high saturated fat content will prevent you from sleeping deeply at night, especially if you are not getting enough fiber in your diet. What is more, an unhealthy diet combined with a lack of sufficient deep sleep can cause or exacerbate health problems such as hypertension, obesity, heart disease and diabetes.
Timing is also important. Eating any type of snack right before you go to bed sends the wrong signals to your brain. When you eat, your brain becomes alert and active instead of preparing to settle down for the night. That is why it is important to eat enough for dinner and then avoid eating until the next morning.
