Do You Have a Clear Picture of Your Health?
The start of a year is perhaps one of the best times to perform a self-assessment. Most people take a closer look at their relationships, finances, habits, and goals to see what's working for or against them. As you get a snapshot of your life, be sure to include your health in the picture.
If you, like most folks, are struggling to keep up a new year's resolution, such as losing weight or eating healthier, you must evaluate your health on a regular basis to know if you are moving in the right direction. How? Well, regular health checkups allow your doctor to examine you for any potential health problems .
So, you agree that you need a snapshot of your health, but where to start?
Below are some common tests and screenings that you can get done for a comprehensive look at your health. Talk to your doctor to figure out which of these exams, or others not listed, you need.
- Immunization update
- Diabetes screening
- Cholesterol profile
- High blood pressure
- Colorectal cancer screening
- Hepatitis screening
- Pelvic exam, pap smear, and mammogram for women
- Testicular and prostate cancer screenings for men
- STI and HIV testing
- Oral and Vision screenings
This may seem like a long list but it may not be necessary for you to be examined for all these issues. Just remember, the earlier most health issues are detected, the better your chances for treatment.
What's most important is that you visit your doctor for a discussion of your medical and family history, age, gender, lifestyle choices (e.g. smoking, diet, etc.), and any irregularities in your health. Using information provided in your interview, your doctor will decide which of these tests are right for you.
