Do Grapes Offer the Same Benefits as Red Wine?
Red wine has long been touted as a heart-healthy elixir that can reduce bad cholesterol (LDL), reduce the risk of blood clots and regulate blood pressure. However, many people who don’t consume alcohol have long wondered if they can get the same health benefits simply from eating grapes or drinking grape juice. The answer, according to some studies, is yes.
The Benefits of Wine
One of the vital health components of red wine is a substance called resveratrol, which is a powerful antioxidant. Additionally, wine contains flavenoids, which help reduce the risk of blood clots, lower cholesterol, protect blood vessels in the heart and lower blood pressure. These all add up to a much lower risk of heart attack and stroke.
Although drinking wine offers many health benefits, none of the major health agencies recommend taking up drinking just to help your heart. Alcohol can be highly addictive for some individuals, lead to impairment and create a variety of other health problems. Luckily, substituting red or purple grape juice for wine can help you achieve many of the same benefits. Red and purple grape juice provides more heart healthy benefits than white grape juice. Like wine, these darker juices contain antioxidants like resveratrol and another type of polyphenol, anthocyanins. These antioxidants reduce the formation of plaque on the walls of arteries which lead to heart disease, stroke and heart attack.
Eating whole grapes regularly is also extremely beneficial. In fact, some studies have shown that eating grapes provides just as many antioxidants as drinking wine or grape juice. In addition, whole grapes also provide fiber for the diet, which helps with weight loss. When choosing grapes, opt for red or purple ones, which contain higher levels of antioxidants than the white or green varieties
