Are Apples the Most Eaten Fruit in America?

Apple, Orange and Bananas

What’s the most eaten fruit in America? Is it apples? While apples are popular, it’s bananas that are the most commonly eaten fruit in American, although apples do come in a close second. People in the United States consume an incredible 11.4 pounds of bananas per person each year, while people only consume 10.7 pounds of apples per person annually.

Health Benefits of Bananas

Since bananas offer great flavor and easy portability, it’s easy to see why they’re so popular. They are also packed with great nutrients and offer some wonderful health benefits. Bananas include plenty of potassium, fiber, and vitamin C. Just a few of the potential health benefits of eating bananas include improving heart health, lowering the risk of cancer, reducing blood pressure, and relieving constipation.

Health Benefits of Apples

Of course, even though apples come in second in popularity, they too pack a powerful nutritional punch. They are crunchy and delicious, and you have plenty of different options to choose from, whether you like a tart apple or something a bit sweeter. Apples include antioxidants and phytonutrients that may help reduce the risk of diabetes, heart disease, high blood pressure, and cancer.

Adding More Apples and Bananas to Your Diet

Both bananas and apples offer great health benefits and a tasty way to get essential nutrients, so they are both worth adding to your diet. Grab a banana or apple on your way out the door in the morning for a good breakfast. Chop up apples in your oatmeal or slice a banana into your oatmeal to add more nutrients to your healthy breakfast. You can even use mashed bananas and applesauce in baked goods to replace butter or oil, lowering the calories and fat while preserving the great flavor.
