Healthy Options to the Late Night Drive Thru

After a long, hectic day of work, you spend three hours at your kid’s youth soccer game. Before the game is over, your stomach starts to rumble from hunger. On the way home, you immediately head to your favorite local fast food restaurant’s drive thru window and order an unhealthy meal for the third time this week. If this scenario sounds familiar, reaching and maintaining a healthy weight may be nearly impossible. Thankfully, quick, easy, and healthy options exist to help you kick this bad habit for good.

One of the easiest dishes to cook after a busy day is a stir-fry. This versatile meal can be prepared with almost any type of meat and vegetables. Regardless of whether you have chicken, shrimp, or beef in your refrigerator, you can use it to whip up a stir-fry in mere minutes. Simply cut up your meat into bite size pieces. Marinate it with a low sodium soy or Worcestershire sauce. Then, cook it in a non-stick skillet. Once it’s done, remove it from the skillet and cook a bag of frozen stir-fry vegetables. Once the vegetables are cooked to your liking, return the meat to the skillet. You can enjoy your healthy concoction over a bed of brown rice or in a whole grain tortilla.

While a stir-fry is always a good option, you may prefer something that requires even less prep and cooking time. Two good staples to keep on hand during these times are pre-baked sweet potatoes and plain Greek yogurt. When you need a late night pick-me-up, top a pre-baked sweet potato with a healthy helping of cinnamon and walnuts. Or, you can create a healthy yogurt parfait by combining layers of plain Greek yogurt, blueberries, strawberries, and flax seeds.

Filling up on calorie laden foods at your favorite fast food restaurant can be tempting when you need a late night meal or snack.. a behavior that can completely derail your weight loss goals. In addition, consuming this type of food late at night may prevent you from sleeping well. When you need a quick snack or speedy meal, opt for healthy recipes that can be prepared in a matter of minutes. And, always keep the necessary ingredients to fix your favorite quick, healthy dishes in your pantry or refrigerator.
