Winter Doesn't Have to Crush Your Routine
If you're managing your weight, any interruption to your exercise routine can lead to disaster. So, what do you do to insure that you don't abandon a walking regimen when the weather gets cold outside? Depending upon where you live, the winter months can play havoc on your ability to consistently use the out-of-doors. However, it is important to your overall health and conditioning that you don't let this become the excuse that wrecks your weight loss plan.
The first day that it is too chilly to take a stroll outside is a great time to head to the local discount store or shopping mall. In fact, you can kill two birds with one stone. Big malls are typically anchored on each end with a major store, many are multi-level, and some have wings that wander off for a quarter of mile or more. With your favorite walking shoes on, it is time to go shopping for a treadmill.
If you're like me and can't afford a new treadmill, you can still use the walkways in the discount store or shopping area as a makeshift track. Even though your regular outside walk may be based on distance, you should know how many minutes of continuous exercise make up your routine. So, map out a route in your head that takes you by the store's (or different stores') exercise equipment. Then take a look at your watch and start walking.
The key now is to maintain a steady pace as you stroll the aisles and corridors for the targeted amount of time. It is important to resist the urge to stop and shop. This can be accomplished by gathering as much information as you can about the store's exercise equipment as a passerby. Once you've walked for the specified amount of time, you can stop on your cool down lap and try out each treadmill to take note of the features you like.
In some areas of the country, a couple of trips may get you through the harshest days of winter. For others, once you know what you like in a treadmill, you can shop online for the best deal. Just don't let Mother Nature spoil your plan.
