Healthier Snacks for Managing Your Weight
When changing your diet habits to healthier eating, avoiding that hungry feeling can be a major concern. Snacking is a normal part of healthy eating, but it's important to monitor your snacking for timing and food selection so that it fits into your healthy diet rather than overloading your body with sugar and empty calories. There are two key concepts to snacking to keep in mind.
First, you should consider the timing of your snacks. Your body needs fuel every few hours to operate at peak energy levels. Mid-morning and mid-afternoon slumps in energy often occur when you haven't eaten in several hours and your metabolism is slowing down. Not only might you feel hungry or sluggish at these times, but your metabolism slowing is also undermining your attempt to take off extra weight. An un-energized body doesn't want to burn fat either! To avoid this, eat a small, healthy snack every few hours or between meals. This will help keep you feeling full, keep your energy moving, and ensure that your metabolism continues to work toward your weight loss goals.
Secondly, you need to consider the types of snacks you are eating. Sugar is a tempting treat and it may temporarily make us feel more energetic because it is full of short, sugar molecule chains that are easy to metabolize into energy. Unfortunately, sugar's energy boost quickly fades and can leave you feeling more tired and even hungrier than before, Instead, look to protein or fiber filled snacks such as vegetables, fruit, a hardboiled egg, nuts, or any other small, healthy treat. Prepare your snacks ahead of time so you can grab a correctly sized portion of something healthy right away; waiting too long may entice you into making a poor food decision.
