People’s weight loss attempts fail for a variety of reasons. One of the most common ones is adopting stringent, unappealing rules that are impossible to follow. For example, in the past, you might have decided to completely eliminate one or more food groups, such as carbohydrates, from your diet. Whenever you succumbed to a carbohydrate craving, you may have abandoned your weight loss plan due to a feeling of defeat.

Trying to eliminate entire food groups from your eating plan often makes you view food negatively instead of positively. The practice of banning certain foods from your plate forever isn’t always healthy either. For example, diets high in whole grains are believed to benefit your digestive system and decrease inflammation in the body. So, promising to never eat another carbohydrate might not be your best route to weight loss success or better health. 

To increase your odds of losing weight and keeping it off for life, strive to eat a variety of delicious, real foods in moderation. While your diet should primarily consist of whole grains, lean meats, vegetables, fruits, nuts, seeds, and low-fat dairy products, eating an occasional cookie, donut, or slice of pizza won’t doom you to a life of obesity.
