Mindful Snacking Versus Careless Snacking
It can be helpful to have a small, nutritious snack a couple hours before your lunch or dinner. In fact, it may help keep you feeling strong while keeping you from overeating when you do sit down to a meal. Unfortunately, the high-calorie, high-fat drinks and foods, frequent snacking, and large portions have resulted in most American adults eating over 600 more calories per day than they did 40 years ago. Snacking does have benefits, but it has to be done the right way.
What is Mindful Snacking?
Mindful snacking is all about eating a properly portioned, nutritious snack when you are feeling hungry. When you snack mindfully, you choose snacks that will boost your intake of vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, and fiber. Basically, mindful snacking is all about choosing healthy foods in healthy portion sizes.
What is Careless Snacking?
Unfortunately, most people snack carelessly. They do not think about what they are eating, and snacking carelessly can easily put you over the total amount of calories you should have each day without offering you any nutritional benefits. Careless snacking has the potential to result in weight gain and many other health problems.
Adding Snacks to Your Diet
How can you add snacks to your diet the healthy way? Focus on mindful snacking. Consider the calories you should be taking in each day and adjust your intake to ensure that you do not go over your caloric allowance by adding snacks. When choosing snacks, make sure you avoid snacks that only offer you empty calories. They will not sate your hunger anyway. Choose healthy snacks and make sure that you stick to proper portion sizes and you will be able to give your body energy without sabotaging your weight loss efforts.
