Should Green Tea Be Part of Your Weight Loss Plan?

Pot and Cup of Green Tea

Over centuries, tea has evolved as a precious plant that has spurred international trade, been absurdly taxed, triggered wars between countries, enslaved a nation and widely touted as a weight loss drink. Fact is, tea can cool you off when you're warm, warm you up when you're cold, stimulate you when you're tired, and calm you down when you're overanxious. That may sound like a lot but considering that tea is the number two drink worldwide behind water, maybe past civilizations were on to something big.

Tea, especially green tea, has been promoted with scientific results to be effective in shedding unwanted pounds. That may be due to the caffeine content, which is higher in green tea as well as helpful antioxidants (called catechins) that are also more plentiful in green tea and proven to have weight reduction effects. A clinical study with rodents concluded that already-fat mice lost weight when fed green tea while those of normal weight did not become obese. A study in humans that was reported in The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition also documented certain fat-fighting properties for obese men who drank green tea.

So what is the botanical difference in green tea? Well it's not in the basic plant as green tea, black tea, white tea and Oolong tea (reddish in color) all come from the Camellia sinensis plant. The difference in color, taste, aroma and caffeine content comes from the differing steps taken during the processing of the actual tea leaves. In the case of green teas, the leaves are picked and immediately sent to be dried or steamed to prevent fermentation which preserves a higher amount of caffeine. Spices and fruit flavors can be added to any of the processed teas.

Although the people who drank a bottle of green tea for three months lost more body fat than people who drank the same amount of black tea, the actual benefit of green tea to weight loss still needs more study. However, it is safe to assume that you can lose substantial amounts of weight by giving up sugary drinks in favor of drinking water or green tea... provided you don't load your cup of tea with sugar.
