Are Avocados Good or Bad for Your Diet?

Fresh Avocados and Sliced Half

While healthy, whole grain foods are not bad to eat while dieting, many people who want to lose weight opt to cut back on the bread, pasta and potatoes and instead eat more fruits, vegetables and low-fat meats. If you chose to go this route, you need to make sure that your body is getting the energy it needs from a healthy source of carbohydrates.

Avocados are not only rich in carbohydrates and healthy fats but have also been touted as one of the world's healthiest foods. They lower the risk of heart disease and are rich in Vitamins C, E, K and B6. Avocados also contain copper, potassium and manganese and a host of other nutrients. What is more, a recent study by the Nutrition Journal shows that eating just half an avocado for lunch can satiate your appetite, making it easy for you to resist the urge to snack on unhealthy foods later on in the afternoon.

Avocados can be eaten on their own, mixed with a salad, added to tacos or even made into a milkshake. However, it is important to realize that this healthy food should be eaten in moderation if you are serious about losing weight. Avocados, unlike most fruits and vegetables, are rich in fat. A medium sized avocado contains about 250 calories and 23 grams of fat.

Avocados can be great for weight loss. They are rich in nutrients and leave you feeling full after you eat. However, they can also lead to weight gain if you eat too many of them. If you enjoy eating avocados and want to include them as part of your weight loss plan, consider cutting back on other sources of carbohydrates in order to maintain a healthy, balanced diet.
