Can Eating Certain Foods Cause Diabetes?

Diabetes refers to a group of metabolic diseases that are characterized by a prolonged period of high blood sugar levels. Type 1 diabetes occurs when the pancreas doesn’t make enough insulin. However, Type 2 diabetes starts with insulin resistance, which occurs when the cells stop responding to insulin the way they should. Some of the symptoms that come with high blood sugar include increased thirst, increased hunger, and frequent urination.

Type 2 Diabetes – Is Diet the Problem?

Will a bad diet and eating certain foods cause Type 2 diabetes? Diet definitely has an impact on your blood sugar, and over time, eating a lot of processed, high carb, high sugar foods has the potential to cause insulin resistance, a precursor to diabetes. However, diet alone is not the only risk factor for diabetes. While failing to be active and eating the wrong foods can increase your risk, genetics also plays a role in the development of Type 2 diabetes.

In many cases, you can make changes to your diet and activity levels that will prevent diabetes or help improve diabetes if you already have it. Many people find that they are able to control diabetes with a combination of diet and exercise. Getting exercise daily and limiting sugars and other types of carbs is often helpful. A diet and exercise program often results in weight loss as well, which can offer further benefits to individuals who have diabetes.

When Lifestyle Changes Don’t Work

Unfortunately, for some people, lifestyle changes like diet and exercise aren’t enough to completely control their diabetes. You may need medications along with healthy lifestyle changes to control your diabetes in some cases. The goal is to make sure you enjoy the best possible health. Your physician can help you come up with a balance of medications and lifestyle changes to keep your blood sugar controlled.

Your goal should be to do everything you can to prevent or control diabetes. That includes eating a well-balanced diet, exercising regularly, and maintaining a healthy weight.
