Dietary fiber, which is found mainly in veggies, fruits, legumes, and whole grains, is well known for helping clear out the intestines. While fiber can definitely keep your digestive system running smoothly, it offers many other great benefits, such as lowering cholesterol, reducing the risk of heart disease, and aiding in weight loss.

Two forms of fiber exist, including:

  • Insoluble Fiber – This type of fiber includes fruit and veggie skins as well as seeds. It’s also found in brown rice and whole weight. Insoluble fiber is the best type of fiber for a healthy digestive system and for weight loss. It helps to offer bulk in the stomach, making you feel more full and also adds bulk in your intestines, keeping your system flowing smoothly.
  • Soluble Fiber – This type of fiber absorbs water. Some of the foods that contain a lot of soluble fiber include apples, beans, and oatmeal. Since it binds and eliminates cholesterol, it’s great for heart health. It won’t spike blood sugar, so it’s an excellent choice for diabetics. Because soluble fiber doesn’t add a lot of calories and makes you feel full, it can help you lose weight as well. 

The great thing about high fiber foods is that they are so versatile. Certain options, such as beans, can be used as a main course. Others make great side dishes. Other fiber rich foods make great snacks, such as raw veggies, fruit, and popcorn. Of course, for the best results, it’s always important to add fiber to your diet slowly and you also need to take in plenty of water. As you increase your fiber intake, you’ll improve your health and give your weight loss efforts a boost.
