How to Shop for Deals at Big Box Chains
Buying fresh foods for bargain prices at big box chains can be a challenge. Thankfully, there are several tips that can make your task easier. Here are some ways to save money when stocking up on fresh fruit, vegetables and other healthy staples.
Work with Someone
Do you have a family member or friend who is also trying to stick to a healthy eating plan? If so, shop together and split large bags of vegetables and fruit on sale. That way, you can take advantage of bulk prices without letting food go to waste.
Use the Freezer
Freeze fresh fruit and vegetables so they don't spoil before you can eat them. Alternatively, you can prepare cooked vegetables and freeze these for future meals. You can also freeze bread, milk and yogurt if need be.
Many stores price items ending with "$.99". However, you will frequently find prices that end with other numbers. If this is the case, then chances are the items have recently been discounted. In Costco, an asterisk above the price indicates that the item in question will not be re-ordered.
Read the Ingredient List and Nutritional Information
Always read the ingredient list and nutritional information before choosing what to buy. Many cheap, so-called healthy items, contain lots of sugar and/or other filler ingredients. If you are serious about maintaining a healthy diet, remember that it is better to spend more on genuinely healthy foods than it is to buy a lot of foods that are cheap yet unhealthy.
It can also be a good idea to visit more than one big box chain to look for good deals. While you don't want to spend too much time shopping, chances are that buying different foods at different stores will help you save money and enable you to purchase a variety of healthy food items on a budget.
