Laugh Yourself Slim
An ancient proverb from the wisdom of Solomon says that laugher is a great medicine. Now, new research says it's also a great weight loss aid. In fact, results of a study published in the International Journal of Obesity proved that laughter can burn calories and boost heart rate.
The study involved 45 pairs of adult friends who viewed series of either funny or serious film clips in a room outfitted with equipment designed to measure the amount of calories burned and monitor the rate, duration and type of laughter. Participants also wore heart rate-measuring monitors.
Researchers found that a good laugh increased participants' heart rate and calorie expenditure by up to 20 percent. The longer they laughed, the greater the effects participants experienced. By their calculations, researchers concluded that 15 minutes of laugher a day can burn up to 50 calories, depending upon a person's weight and the intensity of his or her laughter.
Of course, we're not talking a whole lot of calories. Those 50 burn calories a day amount to a weight loss of about four pounds a year. But if you've been working to lose weight for any amount of time, you know that every little bit counts. Plus, laughter can help make any activity - including workouts and meals - more pleasurable and, therefore, more effective. And, laughter comes with a slew of additional benefits including boosting your immune system and your body's production of HDL cholesterol (the good type), reducing blood sugar, relieving pain, relaxing muscles and brightening skin tone.
