Health Benefits of Eating Garlic

Garlic Press and Red Garlic Cloves

Related to leeks and onions, garlic is an herb that’s grown and consumed all around the world. It’s widely known as having medicinal properties, and it’s currently one of the top selling herbs within the United States. Garlic is known for its pungent, strong flavor, due to allicin, a compound that gives garlic it’s distinct, strong smell. It’s thought that the allicin, along with other elements in garlic, are responsible for the health benefits that come with eating garlic.

Nutritious and Low in Calorie

One of the health benefits of eating garlic is that it’s very nutritious, yet it only has a few calories. It also packs in plenty of flavor without adding lots of calories to your food. A single ounce of garlic only has 42 calories, yet it nearly has two grams of protein, 1 gram of fiber, 23% of your RDA of manganese, and 17% of your RDA of vitamin B6. Other nutrients in garlic include selenium, potassium, calcium, vitamin C, iron, and phosphorus.

Boosts the Immune System

Studies have shown that eating garlic or taking a garlic supplement can boost the immune system, helping the body fight off sickness. It can reduce the number of colds, lower the length of cold symptoms when colds occur, and help prevent other common illnesses.

Improved Heart Health

Garlic has the potential to improve heart health in several ways. Research has shown that eating garlic can reduce blood pressure, which improves heart health. It also can help reduce hardening of the arteries according to some studies. Regularly consuming garlic can also help lower levels of bad cholesterol in the blood, lowering the risk of heart disease.

Not only does garlic offer some great health benefits, it adds a nice punch of flavor to sauces, soups, dressings, and more. It’s an excellent addition to a healthy diet that will also boost your overall health.
