How Does the Body Use the Food I Eat?
Every time we swallow a bite of food our body puts that food to work. We literally are what we eat. So how does our body use the foods that we eat? The whole process begins with digesting.
Digestion and Weight
Our body is like an engine in a car. If we do not have enough fuel, we just don't go anywhere. We eat to gain fuel and that that plays right into both weight loss and weight gain. Our bodies are designed to pack on weight because way back when, food was not as readily available. Today, we have so much available food that we just keep storing it in the form of fat.
Digestion is the process that our body uses to break food down into basic elements such as sugars, lipids, fats, and carbohydrates. Chemically, all of those types of basic food become chains of molecules that our body absorbs and uses. If we have too much of one type of basic element, our body stores it or throws it away. We tend to store fats because they are easiest to convert back into energy when we need them.
The Blood and Weight
The first place that our body looks for energy is in the blood. This is because the red blood cells carry oxygen and food to the cells. If you eat a lot of fats, then your body uses the fat in your blood before it uses the fat that your body has stored.
