Have you ever gone to the grocery store with the intention of loading up on healthy foods only to come back with more junk than anything else? You're not alone. One of the challenges with eating healthy is actually buying the food. Most people are creatures of habit, so it's easy to get stuck going in and buying the same stuff. It's also easy to get sidetracked by attractive packaging and slick advertising. Finally, being busy or hungry can affect the foods you purchase. Here are some tips for overhauling your food shopping habits so that you can actually start eating healthy.

Eat Before You Shop, and Take Your Time

Don't go to the store when you're hungry and in a hurry. Set aside ample time so you don't feel rushed. This way you are less likely to run through the store grabbing whatever looks good. You'll be more likely to stop, think, read labels and make good choices if you've allowed yourself enough time. Also, it's important that you don't go to the store hungry.

Make A List

Don't shop without one. Before you head out, be sure you have a list of healthy foods you can make meals from, plenty of healthy snacks, and any other essentials that you need to complete your meals. If you don't do this, you'll end up filling your cart with non-essentials, or foods that won't help you reach your goals.

Stock Up On Veggies

1/3 of your cart should be vegetables. Buy ingredients for salad, veggies for side dishes, plenty of fresh and healthy veggies for snacks and so on. You may also wish to stock up on frozen vegetables, since they keep longer.

Throw In Some Plain Greek Yogurt

Packed with protein, versatile and low on sugar, plain Greek yogurt can be used in dips and sauces, eaten on its own, and dressed up with other ingredients to make a perfect, easy breakfast, snack or dessert.

Read The Labels

Take time to read labels, keeping an eye out for sugar and carb content, as well as other undesirable fillers. Don't be fooled by so-called "healthy" or "diet" prepared foods. Many of them are worthless and misleading.
